This is a personality type rather than a direct effect of the music—sensation seekers have less reactive nervous systems and so it takes more intense stimuli to generate a sensation of happiness or excitement.
Risk takers are more likely to commit crimes because they are not as anxious about the consequences. This is not caused by the music however; the risk taker prefers more energetic music and more dangerous pastimes as a result of innate personality
and physiology.

Drug Use:Studies regarding a link between heavy metal music and drug use have generated mixed results. One study found that teenagers who listened to heavy metal were more inclined to use drugs, though they were not more likely to use them excessively or become addicted. Other researchers have found no link between music preference and drug use or drug-related values. Overall, use of alcohol and/or drugs by parents has the greatest influence on adolescent drug use.

We even got into show tunes especially the songs from the popular Disney films. “Whistle while you work,” and “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” or “You can fly, you can fly, you can fly,” just to name a few, were different from the rest. The lyrics and the rhythms together, gave you that “you can do anything” sort of feeling.

I can also remember after seeing movies from the “Star Wars” trilogy and how the the music would stay with me so much so that when I left there, I would be so charged that I thought I could take on the world! “Get outta my way, bad guy. You can’t stop me!” Those strong symphonic movements gave me the strength in my posture, the pep in my step, and that burning desire to move past all of those obstacles in life that ever distracted me and impeded my progress. Talk about powerful!

This type of music was different to me than the other songs I had heard on the radio. They were about much more than love and it’s tribulations. These songs gave me energy to be bold, strong, smart, and productive…To move mountains, take control, and change the world.

Motivational songs is what I like to call them, and they are so important because they do motivate, are self and life-affirming, and inspire you to move forward in life. Listening to several of them is like having a meal high in protein without any calories…or a drug without any side effects…Or better yet, petroleum with no emissions. You get the idea.

I am referring to motivational songs that stimulate in the most wholesome way, of course. However, there are quite a few that I find do just the opposite. They make me want to stay focused on crazy things like unrequited love, and suggest that I should care less about life and forget that I’m a lady…bad stuff. But, here’s the problem. Those tunes can be quite catchy. Those infectious hooks and melodies would play in my head over and over like a broken record resulting in all this negative imagery penetrating my consciousness and influencing my thought process. Not good!

Like Notorious B.I.G.’s song “Everyday Struggle” from the Ready to Die album. “I don’t want to live no more. Sometimes I hear death knockin’ at my front door.” Biggie’s music became the soundtrack of an era for us urban generation Xers, while his lyrics became the mantras for his own life. In fact, just three years later, when he was finishing up his second album Life after Death, Christopher Wallace was gunned down in Los Angeles, and the album and all the money he made had a long life after his untimely death.

Bottom line – music is motivational for the good and bad. Sure we’ve heard about extreme cases where perpetrators were so heavily under the influence of their own toxic mix of what they considered to be motivational songs, that they went out and committed heinous crimes like the “Helter Skelter” murders lead by Charles Manson. Or even the story about the former L.A. gang member and convicted killer, Monster Cody, who would listen to popular gangster rap music like Tupac’s “Hit ‘Em Up” before he would go out and commit his own unspeakable acts.

But by and large, we hear more about all the good things music is good for, e.g. its therapeutic qualities. Many hospitals now across the country use music therapy to help “motivate” the healing process in their patients – case in point, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They use music as part of their cardiovascular surgery healing program to “promote relaxation and reduce tension, stress and anxiety.” They find that music helps these patients to relax as it decreases their pain, improves their moods and helps them to sleep better, especially during the recovery period. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

So, to conclude, I’m saying nothing that hasn’t been written or said before. In fact, Samuel Johnson, English author of the eighteenth century, once said that “Music is the only sensual pleasure without vice.” I concur while acknowledging the exceptions, and will continue to be motivated and inspired by music and dedicate my life working to help people harness its power to improve their own lives.

Lots of things in and around the music business revolve around a photo or a photographer. Think of all the events that go on in the music world. The live shows, the awards shows, public appearances, recording dates. What is one thing that you can almost positively plan on seeing at every place a music event is happening? A camera with a photographer attached to the other end of it.

So photographers actually play a huge part in the music industry company. Without them there to record the things going on no one would have any way of seeing the changes that are actually happening to the artists. Let’s face it; it’s amazing how people change when they get money. A certain Disney Diva went from a rather flat chest and some pre-pubescent funky teeth to a cosmetically nice looking late teen / early twenty’s look almost overnight. Without the cameras we might never have known.

But seriously, places like the various freelance places on the Internet and ones that target the music industry specifically make it fairly easy for the photographers out there that want to become involved in this portion of the industry to actually hook up with the people that are willing to give them money to use those God given talents taking pictures that will serve the music world.

What you, as a photographer, need to do is do what you can to get a portfolio of work that might be relevant to a music industry company. Go out and shoot a few local bands at some shows to give a feel for your style. Offer to help the groups out with the CD projects and even the other promo material that they need. As long as they use your information associated with that work it could easily get other bands wanting to actually pay you to do that for them and you can build up a portfolio of things to show other industry people when you approach them looking for work.

During the years I created thousands of tunes. Many compositions were created together with friends, and later I started to make demos that we sent out to record labels. Together with a friend, we got signed on a small Swedish label that wanted to release one of our techno/trance tracks. We were of course very happy for this, and had big plans for the future. This is the first time I came across talks about earning money in context of our music.

However, that record label got into economic problems and we never saw our tune get released. Sadly so, because we both thought it was a very good song and we had a strong concept. The band name we choose was Cube, and we created some sort of mix between techno, trance and euro-disco.

The whole disco scene has always interested me, and I started up a large streaming radio channel via an online service back in the late 1990’s. This proved to be successful, especially since I played only Italo Disco and had many very obscure and different songs in the playlist. At one time, the radio station – then called SouthPole Radio – was the largest Italo Disco radio station on the internet.

But it is costly to run a radio station. Not only hosting and bandwidth – it also costs money to make it legal. All this was done by the online service, but I never got anything back. My radio station was free for all to listen to, and even though I recieved many happy emails about how good the station was, I spent more and more money on the music.

The station did inspire me to keep writing my own music, and I started yet again to create own tunes. This lead to buying equipment, and somewhere during 2000-2001, I created songs with an Amiga 1200 as sequencer (and sampler) hooked up to a Novation BassStation keyboard, a Roland TR-505 (a not so good drum machine) and a Roland SC-88 MkII – a very nice synth module with lots of good sounds.

But over the years, different software sollutions proved to be an improvement to the hardware. The equipment was sold and production started with only different sort of software programs, using everything from PC, Mac and even Atari computers.

When I first laid hands on Spotify I was amazed. Spotify is a very good music streaming service that is free in many parts of the world. But even the paid accounts are worth the money. Spotify tries to distribute all music ever published, which I believe is a hard and tough, but very good, goal.

Since Spotify is available all over the world today, and the fact that they have so much different music, there were no more use for an Italo Disco exclusive radio station anymore. SouthPole Radio was therefore turned into a record label, and in November 2009 SouthPole Radio released its first album: Antarctica, by Pingo® (spotify:album:7zUqiTY4BmwXXUWhP1kyti).

Before we released any album at all, we made a lot of research on how to actually release music on Spotify. First, we wanted to release for UK and USA charts too, and other media centers as Apple’s AppStore, Amazon and such. However, this proved to be fairly expensive, and without our label and artist name well known, we didn’t want to take that chance.

However, several different online systems (Ditto Music was the one we finally signed with) had very cheap methods for distributing to Spotify. SouthPole Radio therefore decided to exclusivly launch the first album on Spotify via this online system. It was very easy too!

Here is how we did it:
First we saved all the tunes in mp3-format in 320Kbps or higher resolution. After that, we created an account with Ditto Music and payed the £2 up front fee. This is a monthly fee that has to be payed for hosting, accounting and such. It is very cheap, and if you get 100 streams per month, you will break even.

You then upload the tunes together with a 800×800 pixel JPG-picture that is your cover art.

That’s it! After that, it takes about 4-5 weeks, and then your music is live for as long as you pay the £2 monthly fee.

For each stream that people listen to in Spotify you will get £0.02. This is also payed out to you monthly.

This is probably the most easy way – and maybe even the cheapest – to get your music on Spotify – and get payed for it! With a bit of marketing, you will get a lot of listeners, and the more listeners, the more you get payed.

If you then update your account on Ditto Music with downloads and other sales, you can keep selling your music for a profit.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned musician, we all face the same problem and ask the question, “Why am I not at the level I want to be and how can I get there?”

To add insult to injury, we see our guitar heroes in magazines and on TV everyday and it seems as if they are constantly inventing new tricks and improving their skills.

The one thing that you need to realize is that you don’t need to be a genius to become a great guitarist. The two key things you need to have in your possession are interest and commitment.

You’ll never meet a great guitarist who isn’t passionate about music.

They didn’t get to the level that they are at by being apathetic and lazy. They took the initiative to go out and try to learn something new.

The guitarist who dares to challenge himself takes the risk of failing. This is where many musicians lose their battle with low self-esteem and quit.

It’s not that they didn’t take the risk, rather, that they failed and couldn’t pick themselves up again. If you realize that failure is a part of growth and that it takes many jam sessions to get some tricks down, you have just acquired the first skill you will need to become the ultimate guitarist.

I have compiled a list of concepts that I believe every guitarist should try out. Unlike other articles you will read, these short and simple steps ask you to do, rather that simply read. Thoughts and attitude are important but in the end it’s what you do that counts to your audience.

Let’s get started with the top ten things you can do to obtain maximum results as a guitarist.

1. Learn something new – Educating yourself is the first step to becoming a better guitarist. Whether you choose to believe it or not, there’s always something new to learn and master. If you are currently studying music in a conservatory, at school, or in college, you will find that learning will come more easier to you. If not, I highly recommend that you get in a program. While I believe in teaching yourself, I also know from first hand experience that motivation and encouragement from a teacher is priceless. Once you conquer the subject that you were learning, push yourself to learn something that you’re not quite comfortable with. Learning within your comfort zone often results with you running around in circles.

2. Make your time count – Practicing does not make perfect, it makes permanent. That makes the time you spend playing your guitar all the more important. Don’t waste your time fiddling around on your guitar.

Dig in and learn something that will aid you on your quest for musical success. Set goals and work towards achieving them. Whether it’s technique, tricks, or a new song, you can become better just by using your time more wisely.

3. Listen to more music – The more music that you are exposed to, the better guitarist you will become. Listen to the bands that you enjoy most and draw inspiration from them. Take note of what the musicians are doing in their songs and make a list of the techniques you want to learn. This can be the motivating force that gets you to play your guitar more often.

4. Surround yourself with excellence – When you play your guitar with people who are better guitarists, you not only learn from them but feel motivated to push yourself to keep up. At first this idea seems obscure. Why would you expose yourself to that kind of stress? Let’s face it, if there’s one thing that will make you get motivated quickly it’s the fact that people are counting on you. Don’t play with musicians who are arrogant and rude. Embarrassment doesn’t foster self-esteem and will only get you down. The people you want to learn from are patient and understanding. Eventually you will find yourself at their level. It happens faster than you might think.

5. Ask yourself what will you do – when you obtain the skills you want – What do you want to do with what you learn? Perhaps you want to make a CD or join a band and play at some local venues. Start planning for it now and use what you currently have. This ties into setting goals but is not to be underestimated. Knowing how you want to use your talent is important. Create a vision and use goals to act on it. Whether you want to play for others, or to the wall in your bedroom, the choice is yours.

6. Teach someone how to play guitar – To teach is to learn. If the only chord you know how to play is a G chord, show someone that. Why? Because it reaffirms what you know and solidifies your knowledge. I can tell you from personal experience that I have learned more through teaching than I ever learned through being taught. It forces you out of your comfort zone and when questions are asked, you need to know the answer. I’m a firm believer that anyone can teach someone something if they want to. Give it a shot and see the results for yourself.

7. Believe in your ability – Yes, I know how cliché this sounds. However, you need to hear it. You can do anything you put your mind to and if you choose to play guitar well, chubby fingers or not, you can! Don’t listen to what others say and be true to yourself. This can be hard seeing as we live in a critical society that doesn’t realize how much words can hurt. Keep at it and surround yourself with supportive people. More of a life lesson than a guitar lesson, but as far as I’m concerned music is intertwined with daily living.

8. You are incomparable – In case you haven’t picked up the hint yet, you are the ultimate guitarist. There is no one like you and there will never be anyone who even comes remotely close to being like you. Integrate who you are into your music and you will never have a shortage of material. Your music will soon form into your own tone and style.

9. Learn what worked for others – Whether you research your favorite guitarist or talk to your guitar teacher, ask others what worked for them. I don’t claim to know all the answers but when everyone puts their heads together, some really neat ideas start to flow. Networking allows you to give and receive at the same time.

10. Crush your weakness – We all know where we lack the most in the guitar realm. For me it’s in technique and finger picking, for others it’s something different. Whatever it is, don’t ignore it while enjoying your recent victory. Keep attacking your weak points and you’ll soon see improvement. The secret is that you never stop seeing problems and you continually get better over time. You’ll never be stuck without something to do. Take out a sheet of paper and write them down. Then find the resources you need to help you destroy them. It’s not unlike a war, but in the end you always win.

You may be surprised to hear that a lot of the common advice distributed amongst guitarists couldn’t be farther from the truth. There are myths and tokens of advice that get passed along and guitarists like yourself use them. Try as hard as you like, but you’ll end up realizing that what meets you at the end of the road is failure.

To avoid that, let’s look at some of the most common myths floating around:

All good players can play all styles: While great in theory, it doesn’t work out in practice. Throughout the history of this newsletter, I have consistently pushed trying various genres of music and becoming a more cultured guitarist. However, no where will you ever hear me, or any other teacher, say that you should be able to master all of them.

The fact is that it takes a lifetime to master one style. Some take up two genres that mix well together, such as blues and rock, but those genres are the exceptions. You will never hear a neoclassical shred guitarist play country. Many jazz musicians take decades to perfect their craft and even then they still see areas that need improvement.

If you want to be a great guitarist, take the genre and style that you’re passionate about and focus on it. Don’t get distracted with other music. Your guitar heroes are heroes because they mastered a genre. Very few will ever play outside of their specialty and that’s just the reality.

You either have “it” or you don’t: Let’s face it, some understand music more easily than others. That doesn’t mean that you can’t be as good as them. Everyone can play guitar, it just depends on the effort and time you want to put in.

There are dozens of specialties within music and no one knows all of them from the time they are born. Perfect pitch is developed, as is technique and originality. Look at where you started from as opposed to where you are now. Would you say that you are just as original as you were when you first picked up the guitar? I know I’m not.

While things may come easier to others, remember that we all have our own struggles within music and that we are in it together.

To sound good, you need the best gear: The best gear is nice, and yes, you do sound better. However, it’s unnecessary for those who aren’t interested in professional music or are just starting out.

Beginners love to see the rack of guitars at their local music store and say, “I want the $2000 one.” That was me for years but the truth is that a guitar of that caliber is useless to someone who can’t play it. Learn on something modest and work your way up.

I have heard crappy guitars sound half-decent when played by someone who knew what they were doing. The same applies to you. For those who can afford $5000 guitars, my advice is go for it.

For the rest of us, I say save your money and work towards being the ultimate guitarist. Think about it, if you sound good on a crummy guitar, how much better will you sound on something that can really produce a good tone?
